Nepenthes northiana

This fascinating painting depicts the upper and lower pitchers of Nepenthes northiana - a species of pitcher plant named after the artist, Marianne North.

Born in England in 1830, Marianne North traveled the world producing accurate paintings of flora and fauna new to science. North painted these Nepenthes northiana pitchers before the species had been officially described and it was named for her after subsequent expeditions to Borneo confirmed it to be a new species.
