About Haeckel's Nepenthes

This strikingly-composed illustration was created by the famous German artist Ernst Haeckel, who is better known for his work with marine fauna. Haeckel's focus on symmetry and levels of organization put him in a class apart from his contemporaries.

This particular print was published in a 1904 volume of the German journal Kunstformen der Natur and listed as Nepenthes melamphora. N. melamphora is now considered a synonym of N. gymnamphora, an extremely variable species of pitcher plant from the western islands of Indonesia.
