Rosa rugosa is a very hardy wild rose capable of surviving both harsh winters and salty seaside air. It is the ancestor of many modern rose cultivars and is still widely planted in its original form.
This piece was done by French illustrator Pierre-Joseph Redouté, "the Rafael of flowers". Of particular note are the extremely detailed thorns. More of Redouté's work can be seen at Rosa centifolia mucosa and Rosa centifolia pompona.
